  • Jenga…

    jenga

    Well, I certainly stirred up a hornet’s nest with my last post.

    While some comments reminded me that the life I have chosen is certain to incur hatred from many people, other comments (and I would say most, actually) were challenging in a good, reasonable way. There were also comments that were supportive. Either way, as soon as I have the time from my responsibilities and studies, I plan on responding to all your questions as best I am able. Please be patient!

    But before Election Day I wanted to ask one more thing regarding the Freedom of Choice Act that Senator Obama is so looking forward to signing as soon as he is able. As mentioned previously, FOCA will basically nullify all pro-life legislation enacted since Roe v. Wade. That is a lot of legislation, voted on not only at the federal level, but also (and hugely) on a state level.

    Here is a good chunk of what FOCA will completely nullify:

    -         the Hyde Amendment, which restricts federal funding for abortions;
    ·         the federal law banning partial birth abortions, which was finally upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in April 2007;
    ·         the “Mexico City Policy,” which has barred the use of federal taxpayers’ money to pay for abortions in other countries;
    ·         laws in 44 states that preserve a parental role when children under 18 seek abortions (remember there are 50 states);
    ·         laws in 40 states that restrict late-term abortions (again, 50 states);
    ·         laws in 46 states that protect the right of conscience for individual health care providers (again… 50…);
    ·         laws in 27 states that protect the right of conscience for institutions;
    ·         laws in 38 states that ban partial birth abortions;
    ·         laws in 33 states that require counseling before having an abortion;
    ·         and laws in 16 states that provide for ultrasounds before an abortion.

    Should one act, one man, be able to undo the votes and laws of so many people?

    Here’s something a little more timely.

    For the third time in California, Proposition 4 is before voters. Basically, Proposition 4 would ammend the state constituion  to require doctors to, in the case of women under the age of 18 seeking an abortion, notify the parents at least 48 hours before the procedure. Say this Proposition passed, then Obama was elected and later completely eradicated it.

    Wouldn’t that be a lot of votes that were completely wasted?

  • The same may happen with Prop 8 – putting a definition into our (California’s) Constitution that a marriage is between [one] a man and [one] a woman; in CA, gay partnerships already have all the legal rights and statuses of a married couple.  All they want to be able to do is call it a fundamental right so they can teach it to kids.  Let me ask this, if it’s fundamental why do they say they wouldn’t teach it to kids in school?  If its natural, why can’t they procreate?  and you can look to Massachusetts and Canada to see the way that our civil liberties are going if you don’t support these two propositions.  If you’re in California, please vote YES on Props 8 & 4

  • =/ Still talking about abortion. You beat that horse dead already. C’mon Jakey. Impress me. I’ll through topics out there even. Canada and NAFTA, Natashas in Turkey, Mormonism vs. Catholicism, North Koreas hunger issues, OTPOR in Serbia. Use your intellect scribe and we shall do mind battle!

    P.S. Do you feel another Kennedy assassination in the near future regarding our new president? It could be like Magic Bullet Theory II!

  • It would certainly throw a lot of hard work and the votes of our citizens down the drain.  I think the best hope may be that FOCA does not pass in Congress, but we shall certainly see…

    @King_of_The_Night - You seem very eager for contention, sir.  Meanwhile, the horse is far from dead.  As for an expansion of topics, have patience.  You have provided the Scribe with some good ideas that he may wish to act upon, or I may look into a few myself.  Peace be with you.

  • I agree with maje_charis. This is more of a wait and see, and I think it’s going to take more than one man to pass FOCA through Congress or even the Senate, so if you feel so strongly about it, tell your senators and congressman what you think about this. That’s what is great about living in a Democracy. No one person should have the power to get things passed without discussing them and the checks and balances already set forward in our country. It will be nice to get back to a President and vice-president who hopefully understand those restrictions.
    I also think there are a few other more pressing matters the new president-elect will have to deal with before even approaching the Pro-abortion bills. He might not even get to them.
    Hope you have a great week!

  • My brain is fried from all this election stuff. Now that Obama is going to be president, I am scared to death of what the future is going to hold for us. All we can do now is PRAY!

  • Looking forward to more of your thoughts on spiritual issues… the political stuff… I’ve gotten too much of it from all sides.

  • Can he really undo all that just by signing something?! That’s ridiculous! I hope all the progress pro-life supporters have made doesn’t go down the tubes!

  • @bardoftara - He has already talked about using Executive Orders to undo as much as he can. It is very ridiculous, and terrifying.
